You can extend the life of your Barbour jacket or accessory by re-waxing it directly at home. To do this, use our specific Wax Thornproof Dressing, available [here], and follow the step-by-step instructions in our guide.
Practical tip: half a tin is usually enough for one jacket, depending on how long it has been since the last waxing. In general: 1 tin = 2 jackets.
Step-by-Step Guide
Waxed cotton is extremely durable and available in different weights, including 170 g and 227 g. Our oldest and most traditional wax is called sylkoil and can be used in all weather conditions. To learn how to apply this type of wax, follow our guide below.
You will need: Barbour Wax, a small saucepan or bowl, hot water, and a sponge or cloth.
- Step 1 | Clean your jacket.
Clean the outside of the jacket with cold water and a sponge. Avoid using hot water or any kind of soap, and never put the jacket in the washing machine, as this would permanently remove the wax and make the jacket impossible to re-wax.
Take a tin of Barbour Wax Thornproof Dressing. Remove the lid and place the tin in a saucepan filled with water hot enough to soften the wax. It should take around 20 minutes for the wax to melt into a liquid consistency.

Using an old cloth or sponge, work the melted wax thoroughly into the jacket, paying extra attention to seams, folds, and any areas where the old wax has dried out. Wipe off any excess wax with a cloth.
To keep the wax soft, leave the tin in hot water throughout the process. If it starts to harden, add more hot water.
Take care to avoid getting wax on the corduroy collar, the inside lining, and inside the pockets.
- Step 4 | Dry your jacket.
Once waxing is complete, hang the jacket up. Allow it to dry overnight in a cool, dry place, away from other garments. Keep in mind that the jacket may shed a little excess wax for a short time, so avoid direct contact with skin or upholstery immediately after waxing.
Do not place it near sources of heat.
IMPORTANT: Re-wax once a year.
We recommend re-waxing your jacket once a year (depending on how often you wear it) to ensure it lasts through many adventures to come.
